GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Assistant to the Parks and Recreation Supervisor. Responsible for the supervision of crews performing general maintenance and upkeep of County boat ramps, parks, playgrounds, athletic areas and other miscellaneous facilities in the absence of the supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following statements describe the principal functions of the job and its scope of responsibility but should not be considered an all-inclusive list of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned.
• Acts as supervisor in the absence of the Parks and Recreation Supervisor.
• Cleans, paints, fertilizes, sprinkles, mows and otherwise maintains grounds and play areas.
• Assists in laying out, reconditioning and readying playing fields, places and removes sod as necessary.
• Performs duties in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings and equipment.
• Performs miscellaneous tasks including custodian duties within a park or playground facility.
• Operates light automotive and/or construction equipment in the performance of duties.
• Performs masonry work, building dugouts and pump houses.
• Builds and repairs fences around tennis courts and ball diamonds.
• Repairs sprinkler heads and pipe systems.
• Assists in the landscaping of parks and facilities.
• Maintains a professional and safe unit and work area adhering to established safety policies and the image desired for the organization.
• Follows consistently the Board policies and procedures.
• Responds productively to change and performs all other related tasks as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Advanced knowledge of general gardening and grounds keeping practices.
• Knowledge of the methods and tools used in grounds keeping work.
• Knowledge of water safety and operation of various watercraft.
• Ability to perform manual labor outdoors.
• Ability to operate and make minor repairs to light construction equipment and trucks.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral instructions.
• Skill in the use of gardening tools and equipment.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, managers, directors, Elected Officials, vendors, and the general public.
PHYSICAL SKILLS:
Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 25% of the time. Frequently operates various types of equipment to include, but not limited to hand and power tools. Must be able to frequently position self to work under or around various items to perform maintenance tasks. Constantly inspects and assesses equipment, buildings, and materials to complete daily tasks. Frequently ascends/descends stairs, ladders, and scaffolding. Frequently moves materials and office equipment weighing up to 40 lbs. Frequently communicates with the public, vendors, and co-workers. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. May be required to work in inclement outdoor weather conditions for up to four (4) hours. In close proximity to bodies of water. Frequently operates motor vehicle for up to four (4) hours, of which four (4) hours may be continuous.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalent diploma preferred. Five (5) years experience in general grounds keeping and concrete work. Two (2) years experience in the supervision of a crew.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess and maintain valid Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class A. Ornamental Turf certification.
OTHER JOB-RELATED REQUIREMENTS:
Disaster Essential. Ability to swim.
